Decision-making
AIDES is an organisation governed by the 1901 law of associations. It is administered by a board of trustees consisting of 24 members who are elected every two years during the annual general meeting. This board then elects the committee for a term of two years. The task of the committee and the board is to define the strategic and political orientations of AIDES actions.

A regional, national and departmental organisation.

The AIDES network is structured on three levels: departmental, regional and national. The departmental offices are grouped together within the big regions.

What does “AIDES” mean?

This word includes the French word “AIDE” meaning support and the English word “AIDS”.
Daniel Defert, founder and first president of AIDES:

“In 1972, when my friend Michel Foucault and I set up The Prison Information Group (French: Groupe d’Information sur les Prisons or GIP), he pointed out to me that the “I” was there to indicate the iota of difference that intellectuals should introduce in their exercise of the proletarian left which then dominated the social movement.

To make a veiled reference to this, in 1984, I tried to find a name which could have two meanings: that is how AIDES was founded, a word which fits together the French word AIDE meaning support and AIDS.”
