Context
The XIVth International Conference on Aids, which took place from July 7th to 12th, 2002 in Barcelona.
Objective
To remind that sub-Saharan Africa is the most Aids affected continent. More than 28 million people are directly affected by Aids in this region. There is an alarming statistic of 3.4 million new infections for the year 2001. Aids has now become the first mortality cause in too many African countries.
Despite this, most African associations fighting Aids, unable to pay entry fees of 850 to 1050 $ per person (not association!), haven’t been able to attend the International Conference in Barcelona!
Still, these associations, who do a remarkable work with derisory means, are the future of the fight against Aids in Africa. Aids cannot be fought on an international level without their know-how and expertise. To carry on their action, the African associations need to be recognised and supported at international level and, of course, to be associated to decisions which concern them in the first place.
Project
It is in such a context that artists have wished to associate themselves with AIDES and its partners, 15 African associations fighting Aids, to deliver a positive message:
"Africans are making efforts against Aids. Did you doubt it?"
Based on cartoons by Wozniak, accompanied by an emotion clad original music composed by the African-American jazzman Archie Shepp (piano and saxophone), this animation, "Nazo Kasina Yo", conveys a combative image of Africans (symbolised by characters inspired by Masaï warriors) in their fight against the Aids pandemic, far from a sordidly realistic vision of Aids in Africa.
