In prison:
Stay Standing !
Because the prevalence of HIV and hepatitis is three to five times higher in prisons than outside, AIDES made the decision to cater for inmates.
The programmes managed by our local offices focus on awareness and prevention among inmates in general or are more specifically oriented towards inmates infected by HIV or other STIs.
For more than fifteen years now, AIDES has offered a place inside prisons where inmates can express themselves individually or in groups.
These programmes are led in close consultation with health and social workers and with penitentiary professionals. They are greatly appreciated by the institutions concerned and the inmates we support, whether it’s during the prison sentence or afterwards.
While leading these programmes we have noticed that even if the law states that “prisoners have a right to the same quality health care as that offered to the rest of the population”, a great deal still has to be done to make this a reality.
Thus, AIDES has taken it upon itself to be a mobilising force on public health issues among the most vulnerable groups, to curb the HIV/Aids and hepatitis epidemics.
These actions have allowed many people, whether they are still in prison or have been released, to “stay standing”!
