Worldwide in 2006*
• 4.3 million new infections (3.9 million in 2004)• 39.5 million HIV positive persons (36,9 million in 2004)
• 2 .9 million deaths from AIDS, including 400,000 children (2.7 million in 2004)
In Africa:
• 2.8 million new infections.
• 24.7 million HIV positive persons, including 2 million children.
• 2.1 million deaths.
• 4.7 million persons in urgent need of treatment, 83% of which don’t have access to it.

The epidemic in France* (figures for 2005)
• 6,700 positive HIV detections in 2005 (6,000 in 2003, +16%).• 25% of positive HIV cases detected less than 6 months after the infection
• 41% of new infections affect women, more than 50% of whom are of sub-Saharan extraction.
• People originating from sub-Saharan Africa amount to 33% of positive HIV detections.
• A majority of infections from heterosexual relations (64 % of positive HIV detections)
• Male homosexuals amount to 27 % of positive HIV detections.
• People using IV drugs amount to less than 2% of positive HIV detections.
