What does “AIDES” mean?
The name encompasses both the French word “aide” (support) and the English word “AIDS”.
It was chosen by Daniel DEFERT, the founder and first Chairman of AIDES:
“When we founded the “Groupe Information Prisons” (GIP) in 1972 with my friend Michel FOUCAULT, he pointed out that the “I” was there to mark the tiny difference that intellectuals should introduce into the practices of the proletarian left that dominated the social movement of the time. In 1984, in deference to him, I tried to find a name that could have two meanings: and that is how AIDES was created, a word that contains both the French “aide” (support) and AIDS.”
