A chronological history of AIDES

The history of AIDES began in September 1984, with a letter sent to a few friends by the sociologist Daniel Defert. “Faced with the certainty of a medical emergency and a moral crisis which is a crisis of identity, I propose setting up a centre for discussion, solidarity and transformation”, he wrote after the death of his friend, the philosopher Michel Foucault. The founder of AIDES started with the observation that AIDS can no longer be reduced to a simple medical issue: there is a need to take a global approach to the individual and encourage him to take an active role in the fight against the epidemic. For over 20 years, AIDES has developed to adapt to the epidemic. Our history and the history of AIDES are closely interwoven.

1984

  • 25 June: Death of the philosopher Michel FOUCAULT. During the summer, his friend, the sociologist Daniel DEFERT, makes contact with a number of legal experts and doctors to discuss medical practice and the fact that the diagnosis is not communicated to the patient.
  • 25 September: Having met the Terence Higgins Trust in London, Daniel DEFERT suggests to a few friends that they found the AIDES association.

1985
